- What is 'Pages from the Rim'? -

Pages from the Rim is a collaborative content project based around the player driven lore of the Sci-Fi colony simulation game known as 'RimWorld'.

At the core of the game, players are tasked with helping colonist survive in the harsh, and often dangerous, biomes of a distant planet. Through will and determination, these colonist build settlements, develop new technologies, form relationships and fight to survive in unforgiving lands.

Through gameplay, players witness their colonist go through incredible journeys, from crashlanding on an alien world with only the most meager of resources for survival, to defending their infant colony from hostile invaders seeking to pillage their newly found wealth, eventually setting a course for the stars and reuniting with their friends and families back in the safety of civilized space.

These sagas are subjective experiences rooted in a shared love for adventure that only RimWorld can provide. The developers of the game label it as a 'story generator', powered by various AI agents that dictate events that the colonist, and players, must deal with and overcome. This lends to the potential for some of gaming's most epic experiences and Pages from the Rim was created to share those experiences though the art of storytelling.

- How does it work? -

The community at large will be made up of a few different channels. There will be the web-side blog (where you are now!), as well as a subreddit and a discord channel. Through these channels, members can communicate, share ideas and develop their stories. Anyone is welcome to join the subreddit. To get access to the Discord and Blog, all an interested members needs to do is ask!

Any player of the game can request to post their own stories on the blog. Many age groups enjoy RimWorld and our mission is to provide a safe space for all players to share their experiences in the way they choose.

Given the brutal nature of the game, some stories may contain more adult themes than others (tales of organ harvesting and drug production just to name a few). With that in mind, all posted stories will be labeled with tags to indicate those that contain more mature content to help mitigate exposure to some of our younger members.

That being said, the endless potential of RimWorld does lend itself to themes and content that may be inappropriate to some audiences. However, every player permitted to post is entitled to share their experiences the way they see fit. We kindly request that mature content is appropriately labeled prior to posting.

- What are the rules? -

In the spirit of keeping this project fun for all, there will not be many hard or fast rules. Instead, there are a few things we ask of our community to ensure that everyone is welcome, all stories are allowed to be shared and that the community at large remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.

1. Have fun. Be Respectful. Be kind.

This whole project is built on the foundation of the shared experiences of a game. We want you to enjoy yourself in this process. We ask that you refrain from being rude, hateful, dishonest or insensitive to others in the community. Any member who is found to be a detriment to the community at large will be banned from all community and project related activities.

2. Tell your stories the way YOU want!

Not everyone is going to be a masterful writer. That's okay! Do not hesitate to share purely because you do not think your writing is 'good enough'. The point of the project is to share your experiences in RimWorld, not to critique your writing style.

This includes telling your stories from any perspective you like. Want to narrate as the all-seeing perspective of the player? Go for it! Telling first hand accounts from your colonist's point of view? Do it! Is your novel based on the thoughts and feelings of a muffalo who witnessed war crimes so heinous that it had to completely rethink morality as whole? That's deep and terrifying but it is certainly welcome!

Our hope is that as the community grows, those with writing experience can help others tell their stories in a more captivating, flushed out and epic way if they so choose to work together.

3. It is a community. We all share in the project.

One of the most important pillars of this project is the community at large. Reddit already has an amazing RimWorld community that shares in the love of the game and the insanity therein. We see this project as an extension of that community and know well that the voices of our members are the most valuable resource we can have (way more valuable than advanced components and yayo).

The potential for this project is in your hands. We are open to hearing any and all suggestions as the project goes on. Our intention is to create multiple community-based components to the project as time goes on and could not do it with any due diligence without your input.

- Why start the project when other communities already exist? -

At first glance, it seems silly to create another community when so many great ones already exist. Why bother when people are already on Reddit's RimWorld sub? People share stories there as well. Why Pages from the Rim?

Simply put, the project is meant to be an archive of RimWorld stories in a centralized, shared space with a focus on the narratives that come from playing the game. More importantly, this project is meant to be more than just a shared repository of stories.

Our hope is that as the community grows, it will evolve into a tight-knit collective of individuals supporting other RimWorld lovers in telling their stories. Even as I type this up, one user shared with me an incredible short story they created depicting their pawns experience. The story captured the essence of Rim life, from crashlanding to death. I do not think I would have ever had the chance to read without combing through miles of content to find it.

At the heart of the project is the fundamental love for storytelling and Pages from the Rim was created as a way to encourage and promote that love through the incredible game of RimWorld.
